Aaron Cresswell: ‘We are underdogs but have earned the right to be there’

“I think over the years you could arguably say that the mentality hasn’t been there as a team,” Aaron Cresswell says as he considers the shift in West Ham’s attitude this season. “But I certainly think that’s not going to happen overnight, you turn into a top eight or six team or whatever. We’re building year on year, that’s what we need to do.”

Cresswell has seen a lot during his seven years in east London. When the former Ipswich left-back made the jump from Championship to Premier League in 2014, West Ham were still at Upton Park. They almost qualified for the Champions League during their final season in their spiritual home and have struggled to live up to expectations since moving to the London Stadium in 2016.

Hiddink announces Russia Euro 2008 squad

Russia coach Guus Hiddink on Tuesday unveiled his final selection of 23 players to play in the Euro 2008 finals.

Hiddink said he had to exclude midfielders Oleg Ivanov of Samara and Spartak Moscow s Alexander Pavlenko from the team s line-up.

I was satisfied with all of my 25 players attitude to our preparations, Hiddink said. They all worked hard and productive.

But I could select only 23 of them to play in Austria and Switzerland. We decided that Ivanov and Pavlenko would not be included in our squad. However, we asked Ivanov to stay with the team until the end of the championship.

We will also ask Spartak management for a permission to leave Pavlenko in the team.

Gerrard backs Liverpool for 2017-18 success

Steven Gerrard believes success is around the corner for Liverpool if they manage to improve their record against the smaller teams.

Jurgen Klopp s men finished fourth in the Premier League table in 2016-17, a huge 17 points behind champions Chelsea.

They impressed against the top teams, though, as they remained unbeaten against their top-six rivals and Gerrard is confident they are on the right track.

We have got a fantastic manager at the helm. I think Liverpool are very, very close, Gerrard told BT Sport.

If you look at the statistics in the top six, they are the best team in terms of head-to-head.

Verdict in Manchester City case set to have huge Premier League impact as hearing draws near

With the exception of 2019/20, when Liverpool took the throne for a year, Manchester City have won the Premier League title every season since 2017/18 under Pep Guardiola s guidance. Even before the ex-Barcelona and Bayern Munich coach took the reigns, they won it twice, in 2011/12 under Roberto Mancini, and in 2013/14 when Manuel Pellegrini sat in the dugout.

However, the apparently unbeatable City are currently being charged over numerous breaches of Premier League s financial rules. Since the original story of 115 broke out, the number has reportedly risen to 130. The hearing is set to start in September and last 10 weeks, and the verdict is expected to be made known early in 2025.

However, City obviously have no intention of going down without a fight. They have cat…

Comeback kings Turkey beat Croatia in Euro 2008

Turkey reached the Euro 2008 semi-finals here on Friday after beating Croatia 3-1 on penalties after the match had finished 1-1 after extra-time.

Semih Senturk levelled for Turkey in the first minute of time added on after Ivan Klasnic had given the Croats the lead in the 119th minute for his second goal in successive matches.

Croatia then missed two penalties and one saved Turkish keeper Rustu Recber turning from villain to hero, after his error gifted the Croats their goal, saving from Mladen Petric to put the Turks through.

The Turks have made a speciality of being the comeback kings here having only led for two minutes of their four games which has seen them twice win matches in the last minute and then save themselves here right at the death.

Madrid move ´made no sense´ in 2018 – Nagelsmann

Julian Nagelsmann did not entertain discussions with Real Madrid in 2018 as he said a move to the then European champions made no sense .

Madrid were rebuilding after winning a fourth Champions League title in five years, with coach Zinedine Zidane and talisman Cristiano Ronaldo both leaving, while final match-winner Gareth Bale also outlined a desire to depart.

The sudden moves thrust Los Blancos into the managerial market, with Nagelsmann impressing at Hoffenheim.

In a wide-ranging interview with Sport Bild on Wednesday, the 33-year-old revealed Madrid pursued a conversation but he rejected the approach.

Madrid turned instead to Julen Lopetegui for a short-lived stint, a move that massively hindered Spain s World Cup campaign, while Nagelsmann s Hoffenh…

On this day in 2012: Luis Suarez apologises for not shaking Patrice Evra’s hand

On this day in 2012, Liverpool striker Luis Suarez apologised for not shaking Manchester United defender Patrice Evra’s hand before the match on the previous day at Old Trafford.

The Uruguayan was banned for eight matches after being found guilty of racially abusing Evra in October 2011 during a league game between the sides at Anfield in October.

Suarez had been expected to shake hands with the defender but failed to do so and prompted an angry reaction.

“I have spoken with the manager (Kenny Dalglish) since the game at Old Trafford and I realise I got things wrong,” Suarez said in a statement.

“I’ve not only let him down but also the club and what it stands for and I’m sorry. I made a mistake and I regret what happened.

Chargers vs Chiefs Thursday Night Football Picks and Predictions: Mahomes Feels the Pressure

Week 2 of NFL betting gets off to a sexy start with an AFC West war on Thursday Night Football. The Los Angeles Chargers visit the Kansas City Chiefs in a divisional dance that could go a long way in deciding who comes out on top of this loaded group of contenders, and I’m here to run down the point spread, total, and give my best NFL betting picks and predictions.

The Chiefs muzzled any doubters in Week 1, blasting the Arizona Cardinals for 44 points en route to an easy win and cover on the road.

Meanwhile, the Bolts looked like they were rolling to a one-sided win over the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 1 but blew a 17-3 halftime lead and narrowly squeaked out a 24-19 win as 3.5-point home favorites.
