FIFA president urges Premier League and LaLiga clubs to release players for international break

FIFA president Gianni Infantino has urged the Premier League and La Liga to release its players in a show of solidarity for the upcoming international break.

Starting after this weekend s matches, the break will run for two weeks and see the resumption of qualifiers for next year s World Cup in Qatar.

Due to strict rules that would require players to quarantine for 10 days upon their return – and no exemption granted by the government – the Premier League has refused to release nearly 60 players travelling to 26 countries on the United Kingdom s red list.

Countries on that list for travel to and from the UK require arrivals to quarantine in a hotel for 10 days upon their return, regardless of vaccination status.

Everton chase Mitrovic

Aleksandar Mitrovic is expected to be on the move from Fulham this summer, as the club from London got relegated from Premier League and now it looks like we could be on the verge of seeing where he will actually move. Everton are very interested in making a move for the Serbia international, according to Sky Sports

Mitrovic had been instrumental in Fulham s promotion season under Slavisa Jokanovic in 2017-18, after joining on loan for the second half of the season. He helped them massively with 12 goals in 17 Championship performances. After that, it was obvious Fulham were going to sign him last summer, bit with 11 goals in this campaign, it was not enough for him to help his team stay in the league.

Everton want to sign him and are also understood to be in the market…

Eddie Howe relishing selection dilemmas as Newcastle prepare for packed season

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe is relishing the dilemma of having to disappoint players as he attempts to negotiate a path through a season which could see his squad stretched to its limits.

The 45-year-old left summer signings Harvey Barnes and Tino Livramento, as well as last season’s top scorer Callum Wilson, sitting on the bench for Saturday’s Premier League opener, but saw Wilson and Barnes come on and score in a 5-1 demolition of Aston Villa.

Howe admitted in the run-up to the game that he had “five or six” difficult decisions to make in the light of a fresh £125million spending spree, Anthony Gordon’s pre-season form and the emergence of homegrown midfielder Elliot Anderson, but that is a problem he welcomes with a Champions League campaign looming.

Rumour Has It: Phillips to snub Man Utd for Liverpool, Arsenal plot Richarlison move

Is a Leeds United midfielder ready to reject a switch to Old Trafford?

Typically, Manchester United are too big to turn down but Kalvin Phillips is believed to be willing to withstand their interest due to the rivalry between the two clubs.

The beneficiaries of such a decision? Liverpool apparently.

La Liga wrap: Sevilla add to Madrid woes, Messi lifts Barcelona

Sevilla heaped more misery on Real Madrid with a 1-0 win, while rivals Barcelona continued their perfect start to the La Liga season.

Defending champions Real were already five points adrift of league leaders Barcelona heading into Saturday s match after drawing and losing two of their opening three matches.

And that gap extended to eight points following Piotr Trochowski s goal in just the second minute of play.

The match started at a frenetic pace with the hosts taking the game up to Jose Mourinho s men.

A shot from the edge of the box inside the first minute was spilled back into the danger area by Iker Casillas but he recovered to stop Alvaro Negredo from tapping in the rebound.

Former Schalke midfielder Ivan Rakitic took the resultant corne…

Toure, Silva got Barry to City

Manchester City midfielder Gareth Barry said the calibre of Yaya Toure and David Silva is the reason why he signed for the club.

The 31-year-old joined City from Aston Villa in 2009 and has been a consistent feature in the Etihad Stadium outfit despite numerous arrivals in midfield.

Barry said having players such as Silva and Toure alongside him allow him to go about his business in the middle of the park quietly.

He told the Manchester Evening News: Since I came to City, you see the players the club have signed and that is the reason I came here.

They can make your job so much easier it s fantastic to receive the ball and see the attacking options we have, the options to give the ball into feet, or put it in behind, and know they will create chances.

Neymar not set on La Liga switch

Neymar has been linked to Barcelona and Real Madrid for some time now, but the player said he is open to moving to clubs outside of Spain.

The Santos prodigy is expected to depart Brazilian domestic football in the enar future, and he said he is open to a move to either the Premier League or the Serie A, although there s nothing concrete from any team in Europe right now.

They are both big countries with great teams and great national teams. I don t have any (specific) choices right now, Neymar said after Brazil drew 1-1 against Colombia in a friendly on Wednesday.

I do dream about playing in Europe, but there s nothing concrete at this time maybe in the future.

Neymar has left quite an impression on the football world since debuting for Santos in 200…

Gomez puts Bayern´s needs first

Mario Gomez says winning the Bundesliga title with Bayern Munich is more important than securing a regular first-team berth in the team.

The striker is no longer an undisputed starter at the Allianz Arena after missing the opening months of the 2012/13 campaign due to injury, but he has insisted lifting trophies is more important to him than returning to the starting XI.

I really only have one big objective and that s winning the Bundesliga title. Everything else is less important to me, Gomez told Bild.

I will be more than happy if I have to come off the bench 10 more times or so this season as long as we end up winning the league title.

It s too soon to congratulate us with the title, though. We know that we have remain focused during the second hal…

Mourinho: It´s more difficult to win now

Jose Mourinho has claimed it is getting harder than ever to capture major prizes, as he prepares to lead Manchester United in the EFL Cup final against Southampton on Sunday.

Having lifted three Premier League titles since 2005, together with a glittering haul of silverware from his time at Porto, Inter and Real Madrid, the Portuguese manager knows what it takes to win trophies.

He has already steered the Red Devils to the relatively minor Community Shield, recording a 2-1 win over Leicester City, and the team remain in the hunt for both the FA Cup and Europa League.

However, they are a distant sixth in the Premier League table, 12 points behind leaders Chelsea, as their wait for a first championship crown since Alex Ferguson s final season in charge, the 2012-13…

Watford v Manchester City: Flores sounds warning to title challengers

Quique Sanchez Flores has warned high-flying Manchester City that his Watford side are a different proposition to the team they beat earlier this season.

City defeated Watford 2-0 in August to set a new club record for consecutive wins with Raheem Sterling and Fernandinho on the scoresheet.

However, Watford have established themselves well in their first season back in the Premier League and they sit ninth with 29 points at the halfway stage of the campaign.

Watford boss Flores is well aware of the quality in City s ranks, but the Spaniard insists his side do not fear any opposition.

The difference [from the last time they played City] is that we have grown a lot in the last four months, he told Watford s official website ahead of Saturday s contest at …
